Berrick is not usually the one who cries at TV shows. Recently, one got him.

In Episode 11 of Living All In, he talks about something he’s been carrying for a while — not a framework, not a philosophy, but a question about what kind of people we are to each other right now, and what we're capable of being.

He goes back to September 11th, 2001. To Jews going to mosques and Muslims standing front and center to condemn what had been done in their name. To neighbors of every political stripe checking on each other. To the proof — not the aspiration, the proof — that this country has chosen its better self before.

And then to what we've watched happen since.

This episode is not political. It's about a grocery store manager in suburban Denver who waved off a stranger's offer to help, walked over to a woman quietly removing items from her cart, put everything back, and told her simply: take care of your family, and pay it forward when you have the opportunity.

It's about the shirt on his back that says "Dear Person Behind Me: The world is a better place with you in it." About stopping at an airport to talk to a woman crying in the security line. About picking up trash on a beach that wasn't his. About a question he first asked in middle school and has been answering ever since: if not me, then who?

If it won't matter in five years, don't give it more than five minutes. That's the whole framework. It fits in a sentence.

Most people navigate their lives by a set of principles they never consciously chose.

Inherited from parents. Absorbed from culture. Handed down by industries, institutions, and peer groups. Accumulated through decades of reasonable decisions that nobody ever stopped to examine.

In Episode 9 of Living All In, Berrick Abramson shares the Code he built instead. Six core pillars, each one earned from a specific moment, at a specific cost, in a life that has known both extraordinary generosity and real cruelty.

On the last show, I talked about the importance and process of defining your Why - what life it is you want to be living now and creating for your future. Once you’ve gotten clear on your Why, it’s time to turn that vision of what life could be into a plan for what life will be. What does it take to make that life happen?

On this episode, we’ll talk about what it takes on all fronts of life - our job or income, our physical and mental well-being, our relationships with others and with ourselves - to have the life we say we want.

I’m going to push you just the way I do myself, my partner and my clients, to get pretty detailed and real here. This is where we’re going to get clear about what that life we imagine really takes. If you’re all-in on it, the work to get there will seem like a small price for turning your thoughts from it being “one day” to today being “day one” on the path.

Too often we let what’s in our life dictate where we’re going instead of deciding where we’re going - and why - and letting that dictate what - and who - is in our life.

Being clear about why is what can drive us & define the actions to get there. I truly believe that every aspect of life - your career, your lifestyle, how you use your time & who you surround yourself with - needs to be driven by your why.
